Signing of the Agreement

Spain signed the agreement of adhesion to the Economic European
Community (CEE) and ended a long stage of isolation with Europe. The prime minister, Felipe González, led the treaty in an act full of protocol. The president González introduced a special quote in his speech: «Spain will try at all costs to maintain peace and justice in the European Union. Nobody will be able to twist this intention of peace». The next morning, a similar act was celebrated in the capital of Portugal.
This meant the beginning of a new era in which Spain had to give its best to contribute and colaborate with the other members of the European Union.
